What Are the Types of Internet Connection Options Available?

Your choice of internet service will largely depend on the internet service providers (ISPs) you have in your area and the type of services they offer. There are some common types of internet services you can get in your area. But setting up an internet connection is different. Regardless of the service, the way you set up the network affects the speed and quality of your connection. Let’s look at the different options for internet setups for your home.

The type of internet networking setups are:

  • Dial-Up
  • Cable
  • DSL
  • Satellite
  • 3G and 4G

Dial-Up

The dial-ups are generally the slowest type of internet connection, and it is good to choose another option if possible.

Cable

The cable service connects to the internet through TV cable, though you do not necessarily need to have a TV to get it. The setup uses a broadband connection and can be faster than both dial-up and DSL service; however, most of the time, it is only available where TV cable service is available.

DSL

This setup uses a broadband connection, which makes it much faster than dial-up. It connects to the internet through a phone line but does not require you to have a landline at home. Unlike a dial-up, you’ll be able to use the internet and your phone line at the same time.

Satellite

This connection uses broadband but does not require cable or phone lines; it connects to the internet via a satellite. And hence, it can be used anywhere in the world. The connectivity can be affected by weather patterns. Satellite connections are usually slower than cable or DSL.

3G and 4G

These services are most commonly provided by mobile phones and mobile networks. It connects wirelessly through your ISP’s network. It is not like the DSL or cable, and the data is limited too. It comes with a package of monthly or tri-monthly services. These are also postpaid plans which have unlimited data.

These are the options for internet setups you can have at your home. All are good, and you need to choose as per your requirement.

Setting up these networks is easy, and if you don’t know the procedure, you can look them up on the internet. You may also have to set up (WiFi setup) some devices together for some internet services.

In order to set up an internet connection at home, you need the following items:

The Modem

The modem is necessary (the fixed wireless lines) to hook up to the internet. It takes analog information and converts it to digital so that the computer can display it.

A Router

It takes the information/data from the modem & “routes” it to your computer.

A Wireless card or USB

The device that receives/accepts the signal sent from your router. That’s what a USB/wireless card does. It is an external modem.

If you have this equipment, you can easily set up an internet connection.

There are many options to get the internet at your home or office, but choosing the wrong source may make you regret it in future. An internet setup is easy to get, but remember your and your business’ requirements in future.

It is often advised to get a high-speed internet connection (WiFi) so everyone, including the employees and customers, can have their tasks done faster than having to wait for each of their Apps and downloads to complete. A connection with a reasonable rate makes the business run smoothly and at a more incredible speed.

If you are setting up the connection for your home, it also needs to be medium speed. The need for video calling and online presentations are more than before nowadays.
